Cruz Azul 0-1 Club Tijuana, LIGA MX Week 4

MEXICO CITY (Jan. 26, 2019) –Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles played to a
1-0 loss against host Cruz Azul Saturday at Estadio Azteca.

A first half penalty kick helped Cruz Azul to the win in the LIGA MX
2019 Clausura Week 4 match.

Elias Hernandez converted the penalty kick in the 24th minute.
Hernandez sent his shot to the right of Lajud, who dove to his left. It
was Hernandez’ third goal of the season. Lajud was called for the foul
on a play in which Lajud slid to try and stop Cruz Azul’s Jonathan
Rodriguez on a breakaway into the penalty area.

Referee Oscar Garcia reviewed the play using the Video Assistant
Referee (VAR) and confirmed the penalty.

Club Tijuana quickly answered the Cruz Azul goal with a quick and
dangerous play by Miller Bolaños. The Ecuadorian fired from outside the
penalty area but it was punched away by a diving Cruz Azul goalkeeper
Jesus Corona.

Xoloitzcuintles striker Gustavo Bou also nearly scored but it was
Corona blocking his shot as well in the 38th minute.

But Lajud was also making standout saves for Club Tijuana. He slid to
block a Martin Cauteruccio point-blank shot on a breakaway. Cauteruccio
had broken free behind the defense with only Lajud to beat.

Club Tijuana came out looking to attack in the second half. Fabian
Castillo nearly scored when he volleyed a shot high and wide to the
right. Castillo took a Bolaños rolling pass on the left but fired off

The Xoloitzcuintles thought it would have a man advantage when Cruz
Azul substitute Stephen Antunes was shown a red card for a foul on
Bolaños. But Garcia the Referee reversed the red card and issued a
yellow card instead after using VAR once again.

It was Club Tijuana who received a red car. Coach Oscar Pareja was sent
off from the coach’s line in the 65th minute. But it was Cruz Azul that
finished with 10 men on the pitch after Stephen Antunes left with a knee
injury. The home side was out of substitutions after the injury.

Club Tijuana continued to pressure Cruz Azul in the final moments of
the match that included shots by Luis Chavez and Ariel Nahuelpan. Chavez
bent a shot just inches from the left post off a free kick. Nahuelpan
fired a left-footed shot just over the crossbar from outside the penalty
area. Cruz Azul goalkeeper Corona also made a handful of saves late in
the match to preserve the Mexico City team’s win.
