“WE’RE NOT CHANGING WHO WE ARE,” –DIEGO COCCA
Manager Diego Cocca highlights team’s identity ahead of first leg of semis
TIJUANA (May 9, 2018) –Coach Diego Cocca has led Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles to the LIGA MX semifinals. The Argentine coach did it in his first year as the team’s manager.
Cocca’s team reached the post season, completing a season objective with only being together for four months. That is not a lot of time for a soccer team to gel and create a chemistry that results in a post season berth. Cocca made it a point that his team has not been playing together much like other squads that reached the “liguilla” and are in the semifinals. And despite the difference, Cocca said he doesn’t plan to change the way his team has worked this 2018 Clausura. It plans to face Toluca the same way during Thursday’s first leg of the semifinals at Estadio Caliente (7:30 p.m. Pacific).
“We are facing a team with a lot of history, a lot more than Tijuana,” Cocca said during his weekly news conference. “It’s obvious they can be viewed as the favorite But we don’t worry about that. Quite the opposite. We have never been the favorites and that is fine. The team is evolving and that has been our goal this season to improve every time. We are not changing the way we think. The way to evolve now is to play a good game against the top team in the tournament.”
Toluca is the No. 1 seed after finishing on top of the standings. It reached the semifinals after beating Monarcas Morelia in the quarterfinals. Club Tijuana is the No. 6 seed. It beat Rayados de Monterrey 3-2 in aggregate with a 1-1 tie at home in the first leg and a 2-1 win in the second leg. Toluca finished the regular season with a league best 36 points and a 11-3-3 record. But that doesn’t worry Cocca.
“This is what we do. We come out and look to attack the opponent at home,” Cocca said. “We are not changing that. We don’t practice anything else. The opponent will try and not let us do what we do and it will play its game but this team will die with its identity.”
The Xoloitzcuintles identity is to continue to fight, Cocca said regardless of the situation.
“We’ve done that through the season,” Cocca said. “It took us a bit more time but our improvement has been evident. We were able to get a goal and a tie on the road against Leon, then a couple more and a win against Rayados. We need to continue to improve on the field and overall in general. And what better way to do it than in the playoffs against the best.”
