Xoloitzcuintles gets late goal in tie vs. Tigres UNAL
Club Tijuana 1-1 Tigres UANL, LIGA MX 2019 Apertura Week 9
TIJUANA (Sept. 13, 2019) –Miller Bolaños converted a penalty kick in
injury time to help Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles to a 1-1 tie against
visiting Tigres UANL Friday at Estadio Caliente.
Bolaños sent his shot to the lower-right corner of the Tigres net,
beating goalkeeper Nahuel Guzman. His goal helped the Xoloitzcuintles to
one more point in the standings in the 2019 Apertura. Club Tijuana is
now 3-1-4 with 11 points after its Week 9 tie.
Club Tijuana pushed late in the match to find the tie and it was in
injury time when Guzman was whistled for a push inside the penalty area
before he went up for a ball. The referee used the Video Assistant
Referee (VAR) to confirm the play.
The Xoloitzcuintles had used extra space after Tigres, the LIGA MX
defending champion, had 10 men. Club Tijuana also finished with 10 men.
Lucas Zelarayan had given the visitors a 1-0 lead with a blast from
about 30-yards out. Zelarayan sent his volley into the left wall of the
Club Tijuana net, beating goalkeeper Gibran Lajud.
Luis Quiñones was later sent off with a double yellow for arguing a
call with the referee. The Monterrey side also finished without its head
coach as Ricardo Ferretti was shown his second yellow of the night. He
continued to protest referee calls.
Club Tijuana finished with 10 men as well. Aldo Cruz was sent off for
stepping on Hugo Ayala’s ankle on a slide tackle. The referee originally
showed a yellow but used the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) to overturn
it and show Cruz a red card in the 56th minute.
Despite the ejection, coach Oscar Pareja’s team continued to try and
find the net. Club Tijuana was able to do so with Bolaños goal and a
handful of Lajud saves on his net.
The Xoloitzcuintles will now head into a Week 10 match at Puebla
Saturday Sept. 21.
